PURA UTZ 07/09-16/09

Gallery re-opens for fashion brand Pura Utz.

Pura UTZ was founded in 2018 by Bernabela and Anna, two friends who met through a non-profit organisation and shared the same dream of handmade jewellery. The team started out with six women, working out of Bernabela’s house in Santiago Atitlan, a bustling town in Guatemala. Together they create beautiful, high-quality beaded jewellery and pouches, inspired by the fruits of the land – a project that has helped enable a full-time income for more than fifty women in Guatemala.

GUILLERMO SOLAS

Guillermo Solas presents at Bate Social Store “Sudden Awareness of Myself”, a unique exhibition in Madrid where he challenges the limits of digital art.

Guillermo Solas pushes the boundaries of artistic expression by merging the realms of digital innovation and visual art. “Sudden Awareness of Myself presents an extraordinary collection of artworks that masterfully reflect the essence of being born, growing up and navigating the virtual world.

Moving away from his previous art projects, Solas dives into a more introspective exploration, delving into the intricacies of digital identities and their evolution in contemporary society. With technology as a profound source of inspiration, the artist examines how society interacts with the digital realm and the reciprocal relationships between “us” and the intangible but undeniably present virtual world. Solas recognises that we are all part of a higher self and seeks to capture this essence through his thought-provoking works.

The exhibition, curated by Carlos Palencia presents a wide range of artworks, from depersonalised portraits that evoke the 21st century (with a touch of Magrittian surrealism) in pieces such as “A selfie”, where the subject may not physically appear, to re-imagined and digitised versions of art history itself.

Many of the pieces are interconnected through an installation spider’s web that the artist uses as a metaphor to show the connections we create individually from our individual selves, but which inevitably expand and reinforce the idea of an “I” that transcends the personal, a web that the viewer must unravel in order to make their way through the exhibition. We are all connected and part of a greater whole.

In accordance with the ideas of the philosopher Pierre Levy, Solas defends the virtual as a dimension of reality, not as something independent of it. Reflecting his own personal concerns and in harmony with his time, the artist addresses fundamental issues such as identity and technology. He neither celebrates nor demonises the latter, but rather gives it the place in his work that we all give it in our daily lives: that of a protagonist.

Guillermo Solas’ exhibition, Sudden Awareness of Myself, challenges visitors to reflect on the multifaceted nature of identity and the ever-evolving role of technology in our lives. Navigating the boundaries between the virtual and the physical, Solas deftly captures the essence of our interconnectedness and raises profound questions about the extent of our individual autonomy. Join us from 8-17 June at Bate Social Store in Madrid for an immersive art experience that will leave you pondering the limits of the self.

@matinal.fc is a community, creative studio and cultural movement focused on Post Football culture ⚽.

An ephemeral installation by MATINAL at the gallery / mutant store @bate_social_store inspired by the concept of playing at home and reproducing the movement generated around a football pitch, with the table football as a representation of the stadium. A piece intervened by local artist Javier Mars @hell0javi will act as the central axis of the space, inviting public interaction and the generation of new conversations.

The collaboration between MATINAL and the creative office @bate.work is materialised in an exclusive clothing capsule, as well as the development of an agenda with different activities focused on the community: round tables with active agents of the Post Football scene, table football tournaments, football morning sessions and generation of third halves.

Matinal Investigates the various forms of sport off the pitch: its presence in fashion, in post-match conversations or in new physical formats, which make up the Third Time Culture. Post Football goes beyond victory and results – winning matters, but it’s not everything.
