IED PRESENTS: MIGUEL VIDES 18/01 – 25/01 IED PRESENTS: MIGUEL VIDES 18/01 – 25/01 Directed by local designers Lucas Criado & Andrea López, Italian Insituto Europeo di Design presents at Bate Social Store the work of the artist Miguel Vides, hosted and produced by students. An exhibition of works made between 2022 and 2023. The central piece and inspiration for the exhibition is the Egg, which not only appears as a symbol but also serves as a poster present in this exhibition, being, on many occasions, the starting point for several of the works presented. The space opens up like the inside of an egg, showing a varied work where graphic design, photography and drawing enter into conversation. The common denominator of these pieces is universal icons such as eggs, water, birds or frozen lemons. All this wrapped in a language close to pop, designed to connect with everyone. Andrés Aparicio “CINCO MINUTOS Y VUELVO” 16/11 – 02/12 Andrés Aparicio “CINCO MINUTOS Y VUELVO” 16/11 – 02/12 Solo exhibition of the Sevillian artist Andrés Aparicio, exclusively for Bate Social Store. Andrés Aparicio was born in Villarasa in 1989 (Huelva). At the age of twenty-seven he starts studying Fine Arts at the University of Seville. In 2019 he travels to Palermo, where he discovers his ingenuity and spontaneity, his bright and contrasting colours, and where he gives himself to a free interpretation of everything he observes. It was in Palermo that his teachers dubbed him “Andrea Paricio”, a pictorial continuation of Andrea Dimarco, an exponent of the New Italian Figuration, both characterised by a playful language, which refers to an imagery inspired by everyday life and its fatal counterpart: oblivion, expiration, disuse.Andrés being the son of craftsmen, his painting has a strong awareness of the work itself. This is reflected in the link between the hand and the head, in the bond between inherited tradition and the capacity to innovate, in the play with its limits. “I play with painting as my father measures and works with wood or as my mother draws a pattern on a canvas. The important thing is to build while understanding its context so that what is created coexists in unison”. In the proposal CINCO MINUTOS Y VUELVO, Andrés shows the importance of context in his work. He generates physical paths that place the spectator in the right circumstance to understand from where and for what the artist creates. And he plays with it – with the work – as cities play with signs. It is, then, the spectator who will have to appropriate the signs to reveal the way back home. In this sense, the signs themselves are unimportant: it is the path that opens up with them that matters, and the memories that settle in our memory. The trip to Palermo will allow Aparicio the chance contemplation of a large red tarpaulin, unfurled every morning by the market workers; a tarpaulin without any aesthetic pretensions, but of a profound involuntary beauty, which Aparicio will paint repeatedly in order to preserve and remember it in the greatest detail. Like a love letter to a memory. In a society where the life of things is volatile, Andrés’s works place us in an arid space, made up of multiple premises that are closed – rented – closed again. In this continuous cycle of uninhabitability and emptiness, movement and supply are but hasty masks of nothingness. This state of restlessness could lead us towards a sense of nothingness. Surprisingly, however, at the end of the street, there is an old stall that remains open. In this corner, we find a glimmer of hope to cling to and feel that we belong. It is a place where we can be and, consequently, remember. ©original text by Aurora Díaz

GUILLERMO SOLAS 8/06 – 17/06 GUILLERMO SOLAS 8/06 – 17/06 Guillermo Solas presents at Bate Social Store “Sudden Awareness of Myself”, a unique exhibition in Madrid where he challenges the limits of digital art. Guillermo Solas pushes the boundaries of artistic expression by merging the realms of digital innovation and visual art. “Sudden Awareness of Myself presents an extraordinary collection of artworks that masterfully reflect the essence of being born, growing up and navigating the virtual world. Moving away from his previous art projects, Solas dives into a more introspective exploration, delving into the intricacies of digital identities and their evolution in contemporary society. With technology as a profound source of inspiration, the artist examines how society interacts with the digital realm and the reciprocal relationships between “us” and the intangible but undeniably present virtual world. Solas recognises that we are all part of a higher self and seeks to capture this essence through his thought-provoking works. The exhibition, curated by Carlos Palencia presents a wide range of artworks, from depersonalised portraits that evoke the 21st century (with a touch of Magrittian surrealism) in pieces such as “A selfie”, where the subject may not physically appear, to re-imagined and digitised versions of art history itself. Many of the pieces are interconnected through an installation spider’s web that the artist uses as a metaphor to show the connections we create individually from our individual selves, but which inevitably expand and reinforce the idea of an “I” that transcends the personal, a web that the viewer must unravel in order to make their way through the exhibition. We are all connected and part of a greater whole. In accordance with the ideas of the philosopher Pierre Levy, Solas defends the virtual as a dimension of reality, not as something independent of it. Reflecting his own personal concerns and in harmony with his time, the artist addresses fundamental issues such as identity and technology. He neither celebrates nor demonises the latter, but rather gives it the place in his work that we all give it in our daily lives: that of a protagonist. Guillermo Solas’ exhibition, Sudden Awareness of Myself, challenges visitors to reflect on the multifaceted nature of identity and the ever-evolving role of technology in our lives. Navigating the boundaries between the virtual and the physical, Solas deftly captures the essence of our interconnectedness and raises profound questions about the extent of our individual autonomy. Join us from 8-17 June at Bate Social Store in Madrid for an immersive art experience that will leave you pondering the limits of the self.
